When you buy a home together for the first time as a couple, your budget is a major factor throughout the process. Along with the down payment, mortgage, and closing costs, another expense to consider is the cost to decorate your home. Thankfully, decorating is one place where you can save money when you’re careful about planning.

Plan First, Then Decorate

You don’t need to have your entire home decorated in your mind before doing anything, but a little planning is the first step to staying on budget. For one thing, planning how you want your home to look helps you avoid impulse buys. When you find something that catches your eye, take a second to stop and ask whether it fits with your plan. HGTV recommends making a design wish list and then prioritizing purchases.

One thing you should plan from the beginning is which furniture items you’ll use and how you want to arrange them. You’ll have to decide what works best in your new space or whether you’re better off with something new. Think about how the furniture you have could be used to create the best layout. Planning a room’s layout doesn’t cost a dime, and it’s a good idea to see how everything works in your space before investing in something new. What you don’t want to do is cram too much into your home and have it end up feeling cluttered.

Be a Cost-Conscious Shopper

After deciding what goes and what stays, you’ll probably have a list of what you still need to purchase. Don’t rush out and buy everything at once! Stay on budget by using smart shopping tricks to find everything on your list at the best price.

Find deals online: Shopping online is an easy way to make the most of your decorating budget, particularly with special promotions. You can often find deals on home decor and use promo codes for your favorite department stores, like Macy’s.

Shop off-season: While home decor doesn’t follow the same seasonal rules as clothing, there are colors that come and go with the seasons. Other items are very much seasonal, like outdoor furniture, and you can usually get these on sale if you time it right.

Shop second-hand: Designers will tell you that one of the best ways to make your home look high-end is to avoid too much matching. Work this piece of advice to your advantage by purchasing unique items second-hand. You can get amazing deals, and with a little creativity, transform something old into a one-of-a-kind piece.

Know Where to Save and Where to Splurge

When it comes to furniture, the more durable things that see lots of use, like your sofa, dining table, and mattress, are usually worth a little extra investment so they last. However, more decorative items, such as lighting, throw pillows, and accessories, are things you can find at a lower price point without losing style or quality. Another benefit to saving on these accent items is that it means you’re less committed to them. If you decide on a new color scheme in a few years, it’s much more affordable to swap out throw pillows than it is to buy a new sofa.

The same way you can spruce up second-hand furniture with a coat of paint, a little creativity is all you need to get unique decor for little to no money. This Simple Balance recommends decorating with tree branches or other things found in nature. If you like to travel, print large photos of beautiful scenery or city landscapes you’ve visited, and search for deals on cheap frames, as an alternative to purchasing art.

Remember that decorating on a budget doesn’t mean your home has to look cheap. You will actually end up with a much nicer look when you put some creativity into your decor. Just make sure you stick to your plan and coordinate with your partner to find the perfect, affordable style that suits you both.
